Portable DVD Player Reviews

Deciding on the best portable DVD player can be tricky, not least because of the large number of different models out there in stores. One new machine worth considering is the Sony DVP-FX970. This swish Sony player boasts a 9-inch widescreen LCD screen. The screen is a tilt and swivel design that allows adjustment by the user through 180 degrees on our page.

The physical dimensions of the Sony DVP-FX970 are 6.8 by 8.7 by 1.7 inches, and it weighs in at 2.3 pounds. The unit comes supplied with a separate remote control. Power is via a Lithium Ion rechargeable battery. Playback time from a full charge is about six hours in total. The Sony player can cope with DVD-Rs, DVD- RWs, audio CDs and CD-Rs, as well as standard DVDs.

One useful additional feature sported by the Sony DVP-FX970 is a USB port. This makes it possible to download video and audio clips and still images from the internet, save them to a USB removable drive, and then view them or listen to them on the Sony DVP-FX970 portable DVD player while out and about. It should be noted, however, that the Sony is not able to play back Apple AAC files purchased from the iTunes Store.

The Sony DVP-FX970 is based around a typically slim plastic case. It is quite a stylish little unit, as befits a machine priced around the mid range of the market. Where this little Sony scores is with its tilt and swivel LCD screen that enables the viewer to twist the screen to the most comfortable angle for viewing. In certain situations, for example when bright sunlight makes the screen difficult to see properly, it is a great feature to be able to swivel the Sony DVP-FX970 screen to a more suitable angle. Any tilt and swivel design is an area vulnerable to damage if the mechanism is not sturdy, but happily Sony have done a good job here and the mechanism felt quite solid and durable, as well as being smooth in operation.

As already mentioned, the Sony DVP-FX970 comes with a remote control; however, it is perfectly easy to operate the unit without using the remote, by using the handy five-way rocker switch on the player itself. As to video and audio quality, both appeared crisp and vibrant.

Concluding this Sony DVP-FX970 review, there is very little to criticize about this smart little portable DVD player. Quality of build and performance are both well up to the mark for a unit in this price range. If you are looking for the best portable DVD player in the sub-$150 price bracket, you could do a lot worse than this capable Sony performer.
